Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse (VSF-Suisse), www.vsf-suisse.org is a politically and religiously neutral humanitarian organization that focuses on the prevention and relief of suffering, disease and hunger, and contributes to the development socio-economic and environmental sustainability, in areas where livestock, agriculture and related issues play or could play an important role in people’s livelihoods, food and nutrition security and resilience. VSF-Suisse works in both humanitarian aid and long-term development in seven countries in West and East Africa. Four exciting positions have popped up in our program in Kenya. The remuneration will be aligned with the rates of VSF-Suisse for the position concerned. These roles require candidates to have the right to work in Kenya. Priority will be given to qualified candidates who reside in the targeted project locations. VSF-Suisse does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process for the advertised position.
Duty station: The position will be 100% field based in Western Kenya
Pertaining to: Project Officer
Expected start date: August 01, 2022
Duration: Six (6) months but will be subject to annual contracts based on acceptable performance and availability of donor funding
Overall Responsibilities:
The post holder will support the implementation of the activity to achieve the goals of imminent animal welfare and food security activities along the poultry value chain in Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga counties , Kisumu and Siaya, currently under negotiation. He/she will work under the direct instruction, guidance and supervision of the Project Manager, and in liaison and close collaboration with all other team leaders/program members in carrying out the functions for which he/she is responsible. . The project aims to improve incomes and employment opportunities for young people along the value chain.
Main responsibilities:
In consultation with the immediate supervisor, the job holder is responsible for the implementation of the activities of the VSF Switzerland project:
• Identify, select and verify project sites and beneficiaries for project implementation.
• Community mobilization and sensitization for the implementation of the project according to the selected project site(s);
• Facilitate community meetings, dialogues and training of community focal points or community committees;
• Pre-harvest and post-harvest hygiene assessment of poultry enterprises
•Prepare a training program and facilitate training of poultry value chain actors on poultry meat food hygiene/safety •Translate into local language during community meetings; dialogues and other community sessions;
• Perform baseline and end of line surveys in close collaboration with the immediate supervisor
• Perform monitoring functions of the project(s) on a periodic basis; • Provide a chronological project activity report
•Represent VSF Switzerland in forums and meetings according to the instructions of the immediate superior;
Qualifications, experience and skills required
• Degree/Diploma in Veterinary Public Health and Meat Technology, Food Science and Technology or related field
• At least 3 years of work experience in veterinary public health/meat technology in industry or as a field practitioner, but not limited to, in a smallholder setting in rainfed areas to strong agricultural potential
• Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, in interpersonal relations and in conflict resolution,
• Excellent IT skills and a demonstrable track record of managing a successful team • Ability to work in a multicultural team and strict adherence to rules, regulations and guidelines
• Experience in conducting assessments, baseline surveys, monitoring and community participatory evaluation exercises
•Experience in the implementation of rural development projects.
• Good facilitation skills and ability to lead workshops/seminars at community level;
• Fluent in written and spoken English • Person of integrity – honesty and good character
