Karamoja: 8 warriors killed, weapons recovered during an operation against the rustling of cattle
A joint security task force led by the Police Anti-Theft Unit (ASTU) and UPDF incapacitated at least eight armed warriors in Karamoja as part of an operation against the violent theft of cattle in the northern region of Uganda.
Recently, security agencies have stepped up their operations following incidents of increased cattle rustling in the area, which have also resulted in the loss of many lives among residents.
A number of tactical deployments were carried out by the police leadership and additional ASTU personnel were sent to team up with the UPDF and suppress the armed warriors.
“From May 1, 2021 to date, we want to let the public know that we have had successes working closely with the UPDF in the fight against cattle rustling and cattle rustling in Karamoja, which is mainly perpetuated by warriors. armed forces who conduct inter-clan raids and subsequent raids. out of revenge, ”police spokesman Fred Enanga said during a press briefing on security in Kampala.
Raids resulting from revenge, he said, are particular with the Karamoja communities of Jiye found in Kotido, Boboth of Kabong, Matheniko of Moroto, Bokora of Napak, Biano of Nakapiripiriti and Nabilatuk as well as threats of aggression. of South Sudan and Pokot. regions of northwestern Kenya.
Enanga added that security has so far recorded 40 incidents since the start of this month where 483 cattle and 109 goats have been stolen. A total of 383 cows and 13 goats were recovered, while 100 cattle and 96 goats are still missing.
“During the operation, agents recovered 8 SMGs and 188 ammunition, a total of 8 worries who are still at the forefront of these attacks were also decommissioned. Five have been arrested and we continue to step up our operations and also deploy more K9 dogs which have been very helpful in tracking down suspected warriors, ”Enanga added.
In March, security carried out a similar raid in Lopuk Sub County, Nakapiripiri District, following an attack on a kraal where 600 head of cattle were stolen.
In a crossfire, the Joint Security Task Force incapacitated 8 warriors and also recovered 8 SMGs.
