Kenya set to host 2025 World Championships in Athletics

Nairobi [Kenya]May 8 (ANI/Xinhua): Kenya is set to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships after President Uhuru Kenyatta assured the country that it is on course to be the first African country to host the world athletics showpiece.
In his address at the inaugural Nairobi City Marathon on Sunday, Kenyatta noted that Kenya was establishing itself as a host of international events, a status he hopes to maintain when he returns to power after elections in August. .
“Yesterday (Saturday) we were at Kasarani Stadium during the Kipchoge Keino Classic which attracted world and Olympic champions, again because of the infrastructure we have developed,” Kenyatta said.
“We are very hopeful, and indeed we are well prepared that in 2025, we will have the pride and pleasure of hosting the first World Championships in Athletics to be held on the African continent,” Kenyatta said. .
Kenya successfully hosted Africa’s World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Label event at its largest stadium, the Chinese-built Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani on Saturday.
On Sunday, the inaugural Nairobi City Marathon was held to mark the completion of the new Nairobi Expressway which was built through a public-private partnership with the China Road and Bridge Corporation.
Apart from athletics, Kenyatta expressed satisfaction that Kenya is increasingly becoming a destination to host other sports.
“In a few weeks, we will host the second edition of the Safari Rally World Rally Championship.
“Kenya is now on the map and has also been on the European tour of the golf circuit. Our rugby players make us men and women proud too,” Kenyatta said.
Meanwhile, the country’s sports cabinet secretary, Amina Mohamed, said the Uhuru Classic Nairobi City marathon has propelled the city of Nairobi into the league of world famous city marathon destinations such as New York City, Tokyo , Chicago and Berlin.
She was speaking after the event which became Africa’s richest road race in terms of prize money, with the winners of the men’s and women’s marathons taking home US$60,000 each. (ANI/Xinhua)
