Kenya’s first saintly-directed cardinal hailed as ‘a great gift to the Church’
He added: “Let us therefore pray that the servant of God will become Venerable. It is our invitation. This is our call. And we should be happy to do that because God’s servant was and is a great person. He was an excellent example for all the peoples of the world to follow.
Cardinal Otunga’s cause for canonization began in 2009 when the then Archbishop of Nairobi, Cardinal Jean Njueasked the Vatican-based Congregation for the Causes of Saints to approve the process.
The request was accepted, allowing Cardinal Otunga to be called a “Servant of God”. Three years ago, various faithful who participated in the memorial mass for the late cardinal expressed optimism in the process of his sainthood, considering him probably the first Kenyan-born up-and-coming saint.
And during Holy Mass last year Marking 18 years since the death of the Servant of God Cardinal Otunga, Fr. Njoroge remembered the Kenyan Cardinal for his service to the people of God whom he loved “very very dearly”.
“If there was a person who loved the Church and loved her very very dearly, it was the Servant of God, Maurice Cardinal Otunga”, the Catholic priest who was appointed Vice Postulator of the cause in December 2019 said.
Prof. Njoroge also described the Servant of God as someone who “loved the word providence”, saying, “Everything he did was in the context of providence, that is, goodness of God, of the grace of God”.
He added, referring to the Cardinal who began his episcopal ministry as Auxiliary Bishop of Kisumu in Kenya in February 1957, “I am convinced that not so long ago a good and holy man lived among we”.
“Let us pray that the process of his beatification will be successful,” he said during the speech on September 6, 2021. Memorial Mass which was celebrated at the Minor Basilica of the Holy Family of the Archdiocese of Nairobi.
In his message of September 6, the vice-postulator for the beatification course of Cardinal Otunga reported that the journey of the Servant of God to become Venerable was progressing well in Rome.
“As many people know, he is now a servant of God and the requirements for promotion to the next stage which is Venerable are being studied by the Postulator in Rome with the congregation that deals with the formation of saints” , Prof. Njoroge said, adding, “The official biography has already been written and submitted to them. The official biography will be inserted in a larger work and our postulator will present it very soon.
